WELCOME TO A.L.L.

Notes from your Curriculum Chair

This is my first semester as Curriculum Chair. Thanks for your vote. The classes were reviewed by the committee with John Kennedy as chair. They did a great job.

NOW I need your support – please see below.  I have learned a lot (including proof reading late into the night- for me maybe 11 and still missing a bunch of tpos(see)). The biggest thing we can do together is take the courses we will participate in. The key to having a successful school is to take advantage of all it offers, classes committees and events. We have had 800 students last year and I enjoyed it, hopefully you did too.

One of the things I got to do as chair is to attend a 2 day meeting (along with Norma Cohen and John Kennedy- I think I was supposed to carry their bags) with 10 other institutes like A.L.L. These 11 represent the best programs out of about 150 schools.

I have reviewed my findings with the Board and thought a few key points would be interesting.

·        Other institutes with similar course offerings have 6-8 times our fees- most of these have less  total classroom hours than us.

·        Other institutes with similar costs have much less classroom hours available

·        Some other institutes have entry requirements that would keep 95% of us out.

·        Almost all other institutes have 1-4 full time paid staff

·        Some institutes are run to raise money for the sponsor college

Also some institutes differ in their goals and programs- not better or worse just different

·        Some use retired professors only to lead classes

·        Some require attendance or students get dropped

·        Some have limited courses and once completed students are done

·        Some have internet or TV based classes

We all have similar issues and successes and A.L.L. should continue to meet with these institutes to learn and teach one another.

Overall I am proud to be a member of A.L.L. Cape Cod and was even prouder when representing us at the meeting. It was obvious in some areas we stand out!

One of our key issues is our wonderfully qualified students and coordinators. But the other schools had this too. Why the difference?

Volunteers doing the work here while other schools had paid staffers. So here comes the key pitch it’s a hanging curve so hit it. WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS. Please fill out the survey form and check your preferences. WE WILL GET BACK TO ALL THIS YEAR!!!! IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD FROM US BY OCTOBER 15 call or write  Fran Quinn  508-385-4833  QUINNEDC@verizon.net.  He will make sure someone contacts you!

–NOTE TO ALL if you want a quicker response send a note directly to Fran or if your choice is  curriculum or computers/word/xl or databases to tommytcape@yahoo.com  in the subject line put

“all volunteer for ____________”. Fran will then forward to right contact. This is much quicker and easier for us.
